With the start of each new season inevitably comes the arrival of a hot new color trend. Fortunately, this year’s it-color takes after my favorite after-hours beverage: a double pour of pinot noir. The trend comes as no surprise after seeing burgundy-lined runways dating as far back as last October. One year (and one quick insta scroll later), there’s no denying that burgundy has officially reclaimed the spotlight as this fall’s color of choice.
It’s been said that this season’s trends are, in fact, nothing new, and while I agree that it isn’t burgundy’s first time topping the color leaderboard, I find it hard to believe that it was this good in seasons past. Across FW24 runways, designers—Gucci, Khaite, Bottega, to name a few—showcased luxe leather jackets, lofty platform loafers, and envelope-style clutches all in the trending hue, signaling burgundy’s ceremonial return. Landing somewhere between apple red and chocolate brown, its allure delivers all of the warm, fuzzy feelings that are synonymous with fall.
From wine-infused accents to full merlot ensembles, there’s no shortage of ways to sport this season’s irresistible, new(ish) color trend. Ahead, I’m sharing the ways I’m excited to style burgundy this season, along with the affordable pieces I have added to my cart.
How to Style Burgundy for Fall
With chocolate brown
They say that dark chocolate is best paired with red wine—which from the looks of it, rings true. BRB, adding this to my list of favorite unexpected color combos.
With coordinating accessories
There’s so many amazing things happening here that I’m not exactly sure where to look first (but in the absolute best way possible). The off-duty look is incredibly chic on its own, but when paired with upscale, color-coordinating accessories screams, “I’m the epitome of fashion.”
With neutrals and a wine-colored bag
My current obsession? I can’t stop layering a gray cardigan over a white tee. The minimalist combo makes for the perfect base for those trendier items, like a leopard print belt or a maroon-colored bag. It’s proof that you don’t need to break the bank on a full burgundy get-up to stay on trend.
Head to toe
From moto jackets to mini skirts, nearly every retailer is carrying a burgundy leather piece or two. My favorite way to style them? Together. Though it’s a bit more maximalist-leaning, the head-to-toe wine-colored ensemble is a great replacement for an all-black look this fall.
With monochrome brown
At first glance, this look reads monochromatic; however, the burgundy bag helps to bring a twinge of differentiation to the all-brown look, making the color more of an accomplice rather than the main attraction.
With a statement coat
This image popped up on my feed a few weeks ago, and I literally haven’t been able to stop thinking about this coat ever since (to the point that I was up in the middle of the night searching for a similar piece of my own). Spoiler alert: I found one for a reasonable price, and it’s linked below.
